Hello,
I recently installed Slackware 8.1, yay, and it worked entirely. I logged in as root, and everything functions proper (or so it seems) under the text-only mode. When I try to 'startx', I get the following errors:

1.EE) VGA(0): virtual Size (1280x1024) (pitch 1280) exceeds
2.video memory
3.EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usuable configuration.
4.
5.Fatal Server Error:
6.No screens found

Ok...I have read quite a few similar posts, but none address the issue of what happens when I get the error from line 1, and/or from line 3. (By the way, those numbers are just for reference)

Normal this is if you have given it a wrong vert. or horiz. sync rate.

If you just installed Slackware, you'll need to configure X before trying to start it since Slack doesn't configure X during the initial install.

Type: xf86config at the command prompt logged in as root and that should take you thru the steps of getting it configured from there.

I managed to fix it, but my mouse is 'rather defunked'. It hovers along the top edge of the screen. (That is on my computer on the school network.)

I installed Slackware successfully today on my computer(this one), but the sound does not work. I am really enjoying having too many Desktop Enviroments to choose from.
The errors about my sound on this machine are simply(I think) my lack of configuration. I do not know how to do this, so I will read.

The mouse problem can be fixed by specifying the right protocol for the mouse in XF86Config file.
Sound can be fixed by loading correct modules for your soundcard.
To find out which protocol, and which modules you need, theres google.com/linux and if you have more questions theres LQ.org
