dunno just thought that if everything is installed as a slack pack (especially upgrades) things would work better.

...or is that only an rpm problem?

packages are usually used because they are easy to install, but they have to support older hardware to make them usable by everyone.

By using the source files you can compile the program for your hardware, which should make it run better.

I guess you are wanting to compile it then make a package for your hardware?

It seems like a lot of trouble to go through for a single machine, but if you have a lot of identical machines and you want to distribute an rpm it may be helpful

you can use rpm to build it, but first you will need to create a spec file and header file

see this link

With RedHat at least, if you try upgrading an application installed as an RPM with the source 99% of the time it mucks things up. Also, if a depenency required by an RPM is installed from the source RPM doesnt think its installed and it work work. I was wondering if slack has the same problem or if it isnt an issue.

If you are going to install with source just remove the rpm first. you should not have any problems. Or get the source rpm, compile and upgrade it.
