Question Slackware 8.0

I'm relatively new to linux (I've installed RH6.x on a desktop - not used it at all, and installed ML8.1 on a notebook and played around with it a bit). I use my notebook a lot, I am a bit unhappy with how slow ML is, windows are quite jerky and the filesystem seems a bit messy, lots of packages installed that I don't and won't ever used. I've heard Slackware is a lot lighter, but more difficult to get happening, so I'm wondering if someone can tell me exactly how hard it is to do and whether it's recommended.
Notebook details:
P3 1Ghz CPU
512Mb RAM
64Mb Video RAM
DVD/CDR/W combined
Lucent winmodem - oh yes, but I've got an external as well.
IR ports, IEEE etc etc.
Thanks,
e.

When you boot up into the installation there is a menu to follow and it is fairly easy.

Once it is installed it depends on what you want to setup on it as to how much you will have to do.
