I know it may sound a bit silly but I found the BSD forum has better explanation on this subject and suggest you do a search with "mouse problem" or "mouse scrolling". BSD systems also use xorg and the explanations there seem to be in better details as the mouse problems are reported more frequent. I remember reading a good write-up on how to use the protocol but do take a look on the Zaxiamapping too.
