Sites that list comp hardware that works with linux?
I have been wondering about building cheap, but usable computers to sell linux on around my city. However, my knowledge of computer parts is fairly limitied. I do know what I want to look for when it comes to certain parts, but not something such as mobo, unit case, or power unit.
If there really isn't a site, if anyone wanted to, post the kinds of cases, power units, and mobo's there are, and if possible links to their specs, and I'll start working on this myself. The only things that are a must, pci-e slot, and 2.5ghz and/or greater cpu.
I have GOT to get around to learning what all the links are at the top...Sheesh...Well, I found a few other things while looking for that before. So not a complete waste of time... ...
On a slightly related note, and may be of use to the OP...
I'm interested in putting together a list of suppliers of Linux pre-installed PCs. Here's what I've got so far. Any other sites anyone knows of & would recommend would be handy. The list so far is UK based or will ship to the UK. I can easily split the list into international sections...

Not preloaded, but handy none the less: www.novatech.co.uk are good because they sell computers with NO OS installed, which is at least half the battle as you save on MS tax.

Yup, half the battle indeed. however, what I want is a list that noobs can refer to if they'd like to try Linux but are put off by the whole installation & configuration thing. I think that is a big turn off to a lot of people who are used to going into a shop and buying a PC with you-know-what installed.
Well, I found three so far that seem promising, however, only one was found in any of the linux compatibility lists, but I believe the chipsets are supported.
One mobo has the g31 chipset, and we have a system that has G33/G31 chipset which ran Zenwalk 5.2, and I could always put Slack 12.2 on there. (I am not sure, but I think the intel drivers don't work well with the newer versions of X. Wasn't until we upgraded the graphics card to nvidia was I able to get Salix 13.0, based on Slackware 13.0, to work correctly). However, I think I'll not bother with it at the moment, though. ASUS P5KPL-AM
(I do know I'll have to look into some other distro other than Slackware, though. I can't imagine trying to explain to someone who has never used linux how to use it. Hell, I don't even know how I use it )
These two seem the most promising. However, looking into these was primarily just a test run. So far, for only the CPU, mobo, and memory, it would come to about <$250.00 for a decent setup, <$200.00 good, <$180.00 fair...Rough guess...
Either way, now the hunt is on for a case, hd, and power supply. Then I'll be able to find better deals and put all the costs together, look up the prices of similar systems on a companies web site, then check ebay, to get an idea of the over all costs. Then after that, do more looking up, and see just how low I can go for a decent setup...
The case, ram, and psu I still need to read more to make sure they are compatible.
I still haven't decided if I should go with a dual core or not. The 3.0 to 3.8ghz single cores are good choices, but not too certain as of yet.
Either way, that system can be put together between $230 to $300, depending on where I purchase certain hardware, and if I decide to stick with the 750gb hd, as well as the kind of ram that can be used on that particular MSI board (Though, I'm still not too convinced about using MSI. So far I've broken which boards to use down to MSI, ASUS, ASRock, and Intel).
Another thought that crossed my mind which made me rethink this setup is the games. I haven't really seen any heavy graphical games like GTAIV, L4D, etc for linux, so I do need to think about this more.
Anyway, now I need to start configuring a system for a single core on a 775 system. Though, I'm not certain about such a thing, because the CPUs and mobos are not too much different in price from the E5200, only $30 or $15 difference in cost.
Either way, I've learned a lot while doing all this reading, and still much more to learn and much more to read...Has been fun......
