single user mode in lilo

hello everyone

i've just tried to upgrade my kernel and i'm getting a kernel panic error on boot.
I have lilo timeout set to 0 so i cant figure out how to get into single user mode.
i've tried using a gentoo livecd to mount the drive and edit the lilo.conf file and have done so successfully, however i am unable to run the command "lilo" to update the changes. i've tried /sbin/lilo, executing, everything i can think of. still no luck
anybody have any ideas? i would like to if possible just revert to my previous kernel and change configuration options of the new kernel
thanks

Keep pressing a key while your computer boots up to stop the default timeout second, might work, might not. Or boot up with a Slackware cd which might have lilo to rescue it.

And if you get in and can edit this, make this a learning lesson to never set your timeout to 0 for lilo, at least give yourself a second or two.. it's not wasting that much of your life!
