significance of 'core' file ?

Hello,

What's the significance of the 'core' file ?

I've noticed it in several major directories, like usr, root, etc. And the size of these files is 20 mb.

Regards,
Ahsan.

Core files are typically generated when programs (NETSCAPE) crashes, and they dump the current state of the system to a file incase you want to attempt to understand it.

They can be safely deleted, indeed kde and gnome icons for core files generally depict bombs with big crosses of them, saying 'delete me!'
