I have a new UPS with some software that should run on my Gentoo server. This software will execte a batch file or whatever really.
I also have software for my windowsXP desktop that can do pretty much the same thing but at 10Meg i consider it to be bloatware.
So my plan is to run the serial feed from the ups into the Gentoo server and run a script file that will a) shutdown the server b) shutdown the windowsXP box.
Problem is i dont know how to shutdown the windows box from linux.

Any ideas?
I have an ssh server installed on my windows box but running shutdown.exe gives me errors.

Why not create a share on XP only accesible by a special account from the linux box, just get the linux box to write a file called "shutdown.txt" to the directory then set up a scheduled task in windows to check for the files existance every x minutes. If it exists delete it and shutdown if it doesn't then exit.
