shutdown now -h from X crashes

When i execute the shutdown now -h command from inside X, kde or fluxbox; my system will either go all fuzzy and shutdown, or will go all fuzzy and hand until i restart. I have to exit X, and then exec the command to shut it down 100%. around 20% of the time ctrl-alt-bkspc will hang system, and startup also hands sometimes.

Using gentoo with nvidia drivers, got nvidia-glx and nvidia-kernel installed, done it manually and through emerge. Set up the xorg.conf file correctly. Just don't know whether I have a faulty card or something with gentoo...

Using a laptop, tecra m2 with a fx5200.
