Red face Shutdown issue under X

Hi,

I installed Rhat 7.1 on my compaq Armada 1750
by default the KDE graphical login is loaded

Log in and log out is no problem but what I would like to remove is the option of shutting down the system, I prefer that only a root user can shutdown the system when he is logged in.

On the Gnome or KDE log in screen is by default the option shutdown available.

Does someone know how to suppres this option ?

don't know about removing it from the graphical shutdown/halt button but couldn't you just remove their access rights or paths to any of the shutdown commands... ?? that would keep them from being able to shutdown the machine.

I think you might find that even though the option to shutdown/reboot is in the graphic logout menu the user will still need to issue the root password to execute the command, at least thats the way it should be. Have you tried it from a user acc?

i know some later versions of redhat if a regular user uses the halt command, it won't prompt for a root password.. shutdown -h now won't work though, not in users path by default.

When I had TurboLinux installed, the computer would boot up into a graphical login. I would log in as user. When I was done, I would log out and it would take me back to the graphical login where I could select from a menu to either halt or reboot.

I now have Caldera eDesktop 2.4 that boots into a graphical login. After I get done doing things as user, I logout and end up at the graphical login. I can select from a menu to either shutdown and halt or shutdown and reboot.

In either distro, I never had to enter in the root password.

This exactly what I mean.

The sytem reboots, starts a graphical login and on this graphical login you have the following options:
Username
password
and then you have the option reboot/shutdown.

So, even if you do not log in and you find a graphical login screen everybody (even the cleaning lady) can shutdown my server. I would like to prevent this by removing or disabling this button on the graphical login screen.

Does somebody has an idea ?

FlodderMouse, if you're using ' kdm ' to login, try running the program kdmconfig. On my box, it's located in ' /opt/kde/bin '. When you get it running, click on the ' Sessions ' tab and at the top there is a drop down menu you can select who can reboot or shutdown. Mine has four selections: None, All, Root Only, and Console. It was set for Console. I changed it to Root Only. When I logged out and clicked on shutdown, I got a dialog box with the reboot and shutdown options and it asked for the root password. I hope this helps.
