Shift Backspace SuSE 9.0! Help!

Hi,

I have had this problem. When I press "Shift" and "Backspace", the computer presents me with a Login Screen! How do I turn it off! It's really annoying!

Re: Shift Backspace SuSE 9.0! Help!

You're right, this is very annoying. This should be set by default (at least) to Ctl-Alt-Backspace, not just Shift-Backspace. Or it should be turned off by default.

To turn this off, use xmodmap to reset the Shift-Backspace key to be just a normal Backspace:

First, display the current mapping:

# xmodmap -pp -pk | less

You'll probably see keycode 22 mapped like this:

22 0xff08 (BackSpace) 0xfed5 (Terminate_Server)

So, then remap it:

# xmodmap -e "keycode 22 = BackSpace BackSpace"

Now when you run the -pp -pk again:

# xmodmap -pp -pk | less
<snip>
22 0xff08 (BackSpace) 0xff08 (BackSpace)

This should have disabled Terminate_Server for shift-backspace.

To permanently add it to your xconfig, you might have a file "Xmodmap" located at /etc/X11/Xmodmap or elsewhere, or put it in .xmodmap if referenced, or .xsession or somewhere. Good luck,

P.S. Note that if you login not using an xdm-based login, allowing the Terminate_Server option can actually be a security vulnerability, as you could have your session xlock'd and be away from your system, and someone could terminate your server, only to be sitting at the command line, logged in.
