got a fluxbox,
an account which has sh as default
got an xterm
problem being that inside xterm i can copy paste no probs, but if i have any gui app which i want to copy paste from/to it doesn't work (so lets say between xterm and gedit there is no copy paste).
This does work with bash, however it seems a bit heavy and i'd rather not use it for this user's account.
Do you have any particular shell in mind i could try for this?
I don't understand the relationship between which shell you use, and the copy-paste problem

You mean if you use bash in the xterm you can copy-past?? Also, usually sh is just a symlink to bash so they should be the same thing...

Well you can see a list of shells on the shell of the year thread. But like I said the shell you're using shouldn't affect copy-pasting stuff. Maybe you want a different terminal emulator to replace xterm? For that you might try rxvt (basic no-frills), aterm, or eterm (have some fancy options like transparency and stuff)
To copy/paste from a gui app to a terminal:
1) Highlight what you want to paste then either:
2a) middle-click in the terminal to paste it or
2b) press <Ctrl>+<C> to copy it, and press <Shift>+<Insert> to paste it.
To copy/paste from a terminal to a gui app
1) Using the mouse, highlight what you want to paste
2a) Middle-click where you want to paste that information (no copy needed) or
2b) paste it with <Ctrl>+<V> - note: this doesn't always work - system dependent
On a mouse with 2 buttons and a scroll wheel, typically you can push the wheel down to simulate a middle-click. If this doesn't work, click both buttons at the same time. On a 3-button mouse however, simply use the middle button.
HTH
Edit: just to add: the middle-clicking has worked with every WM/DE and every terminal emulator I've ever used.
Is this all gui apps or just certain ones? I have no problem copying from xterm to firefox to copy error messages into the reply box for instance. However, I did notice that Maple completely ignores the any attempts to copy to it, seems like it maintains its own clipboard.
I agree, hilight and middle click is a universe X11 trait (well, mostly universal). You can even hilight and middle click between Firefox and xchat for example. Terminal to terminal, terminal to gui, anything works for me (xfce4, although the wm shouldn't really matter). The only place where it wouldn't work that I can think of is different toolkits (such as GTK -> QT), but I haven't tested that.
ghm, i just checked some other apps incl firefox - still nada
this kind of brings another interesting question out: in linux in general is the copy/paste buffer (or which ever the right name is) a common thing, or this is somewhat personal to each app?
txs!
