shell problem

Hello,
we have linux 7.1 and we accidentally changed the etc/passwd file while trying to add users. In the process /bin/bash has become /bin/bash:xyz while in the root prompt for root user.
After that, it is neither allowing to log in as Super User nor allowing to change the etc/passwd file. It is giving the error command not found though we know the su password.
we have the passwd.bak file.we want to know is it possible to use that back up without being in su. Is reintallation the only option. If so, will the previous data will be formated.
Please help.

Regards,
Vivek

First of all, there is no such thing as linux 7.1, you most likely are refering to a distribution

On to your problem, if you have a rescue disk, or the installation cds you can boot your system in rescue mode. Usually you type "linux rescue" at the shell. It will not prompt you for your password, allowing you to do a "cp passwd.bak passwd" which should do the trick for you.

Good luck!
