Though a lot can be done with the login script.

Greetings,

By default Fedora Core 4 sets vim (with color) to users with uid lower than 100.
This is set in /etc/profile.d/vim.sh and /etc/profile.d/vim.csh depending on your preferred shell.

In order to have vim run by default for root and lower uids users either put the following line
in ~/.bashrc or /etc/bashrc for system-wide.

alias vi=/usr/bin/vim
Note that this is not recommended due to security reasons.
