sharing files between a Gnome Ubuntu PC & a KDE Mandriva PC

Hi all,

I use to have all my desktop under Gnome, where it was really easy to share files between PC's. I used to go to "connect to server", and then choose SSH, and write the IP of the other PC... After entering the right password, I had the filesystem of the other PC, and I could drag & drop... Easy !

Now, my main desktop runs KDE Mandriva 2007. My laptop runs Ubuntu Dapper, with Gnome only.

-How do I browse my Ubuntu PC from my KDE MDV PC ? (and vice-versa)

Thank you in advance for your advices !

There are a lot of different options. It sounds like you were using SFTP before. There are a number of ways to do this, but if you have KDE you can open it and type in the URL bar "sftp://host.to.connect.to" and you will be prompted for a user name and password. Then you can browse on that other machine.

Edit to add: As long as you're running sshd on the Mandriva system the way you used before in GNOME should work. These things aren't specific to desktop environments (just to connection method is different).

Hello Btmiller,

Thank you very much for your answer !

Indeed, I tried from KDE Mandriva to type in Konqueror address-bar : sftp://192.168.1.2 and it worked perfectly ! I could browse my Gnome PC from my KDE PC, no problem, so your trick worked this way.

Now, from my Gnome PC, I tried it but it did not worked... There might be something to enable in the KDE PC... It shouln't have anything to see with the firewall, since it is not the internet, but the local network...

Anyway, I have reached the point where I can share files, so it is a good thing...

If you have any idea about how to enter my KDE PC from my Gnome PC, please feel free to share, and thank you again in advance !
