sftp user cannot delete

I am using Proftp and openssh to allow clients to login and post files to my server. I need to allow the user to delete as well but when the user tries to delete files they have added the session closes. Can someone tell me how to allow my remote user delete from a chrooted directory.

Are you using proftp or ssh ?

ssh is over port 22 and ftp is over port 21. nmap the server and see what you are using...

ssh is used through the client sftp/winsftp etc.
ftp is used through ftp clients.
