Settings problem with projector

When I connect my laptop to a projector before I turn on my computer, it works perfectly all the way to the login screen. The moment I log in, the projector loose the signal. When I try to edit my settings, I sometimes manage to get it to work, but it requires some automatic editing of a config file, and then i have to log out and back in. This sometimes work, but not always. When it works, however, it often cut some of the picture, and the resolution is low. I find this strange because it works perfectly during boot and all the way to login without any configuration. Is there any way to solve this? I am using Linux Mint Gloria.

Hi Suppen, can you tell us your exactly brand/model for your laptop. Of course what display card you are using, so far as I know Intel, Nvidia is working pretty good, ATI i'm not sure.

Regarding the projector working well during boot is common coz the X server will take over the display after OS boot up successfully.

My laptop is a HP Compaq nx7010 running Linux Mint Gloria (x86). It has an ATI Mobiity Radeon 9200 graphics card that I can't find a driver for. Would be happy if someone could find one for me.

The login screen is run by X too, isn't it?

The open source drivers should work just fine with that card. While the projector is hooked up, please bring up a terminal in X and run 'xrandr --verbose' and show us the output.

I won't be able to use the projector for some time now. It's on my school, and I can't just use it when I want to.

Regarding the driver: After some googling, I tried apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx. It installed just fine, but when I restarted the system, it couldn't start X. Luckily I managed to remove it again. Is this what you ment with "the open source drivers", or is that something else?

No, fglrx is proprietary. The open source drivers should have come with your distribution and been enabled by default.

I leave ATI long time oredi, try to get driver from ATI official website. Their toolkit may included software to link with projector.

No, do *not* download the driver from the ATI website. That is absolutely horrendous advice and is more likely to break your machine than fix anything.

fglrx dropped support for your GPU probably 5 years ago.

It works with the drivers that came with the OS, but it works badly. I know the drivers on the ATI website suck. I have tried them twice, and both times i needed to reinstall the system.

You should be able to use the project just fine once you enable it and configure the correct resolution using xrandr.

Eww... Avoid nvidia at all costs. Get a laptop with an ATI card supported by the open source drivers.
