Setting Up Hard-wire network

The PC that I installed slackware on is hard-wired into the network. WIth Gentoo I didn't have to do any set-up, it just plugged in and worked however now with slackware for some reason the internet won't work. This is strange because when I ran just straight out of the console during installation the internet was fine.

Any ideas on what I should do?

For your perusal I am running KDE

Hi Rakeyry,

The Gentoo setup is likely to have had a DHCP client running, hence why you needed no setup. It would have also detected and setup the network card. You should ensure slackware has your network card installed, which can be simply checked by running 'ifconfig -a', and you should see an line for "eth0" if the hardware is sorted.

You then need to install the dhcp client - I will admit here I am not a slackware user, but I can imagine the packages exist for it, and it shouldn't be too much of a nightmare to sort out.

Also, can I give you friendly reminder not to post across two forums here, have a quick scan of the LQ rules.

Right now I am trying to get LISa to work but I cannot because as a user I cannot edit my /etc/rc.d/> files and I in root I cannot open a text editor. WHat do I do?

Okay, you probably cannot run a gui editor unless you do a couple of things:
(The following assumes you are on console)
As your user, set the xhost to allow localhost 'xhost +localhost', and make sure that when you su, DISPLAY=:0.0.
You should then be able to run your editor of choice.

If you are in kde, you may be able to proceed the command to start the gui editor with kdesu.

For quick edits as root (and a number of other things), I generally use VI as it is small and works in almost any situation.
