setting boot screen resolution

I have installed a splash screen according to instruction in http://www.gnome-look.org/content/sh...?content=50468

As it is mentioned in the instruction, i have to change my boot screen resolution to vga=791, but when I do that, system tells me that it is not a valid option and press enter and choose some. number from 1 to 6.

I chose 5, and accordingly my splash screen was not fit in the screen.

I have a Dell Latitude D505 15" laptop with current resolution of 1024*760.

Any idea?

Where/how did you try to set the resolution? On the kernel line in grub.conf?

(copy/paste to illustrate your reply.)

OK - what is the exact error message when you boot?

Presumably your boot-screen resolution is not set to 1024x768 like your desktop, otherwise the theme would fit. I'm guessing it is too big for the monitor?

Did you remember the last step?
# update-initramfs -u

I receive following error:

" You passed an undefined mode number.

Press enter to see video mode available"

And then I see following mode:

0 0F00 80x25
1 0F01 80x50
. ..........
. ..........
. ..........
6 ..........

It won't work then I don't think. I had the same problem with the onboard card of my Dell. The only way I was able to use a bootsplash screen was to install a new graphics card.

I bet all the modes offered look like crap too, don't they?
