setenv - bash - export

i have some instructions that say to use setenv thusly:
setenv PORT_RANGE 20000,210000
which is supposed to set PORT_RANGE to a range of values.

I am using bash so I am using export instead of setenv, but:
export PORT_RANGE=20000,21000
doesn't seem to work.

How can I do this?

what's not to work? why do you think it's failing? can you read it back with "echo $PORT_RANGE"?

well i did a
#printenv $PORT_RANGE
and it returned nothing, but you suggested
#echo $PORT_RANGE
it returns
10010,10190
but then again if i arbitrarily replace the comma with something else:
export PORT_RANGE2=10010!10190
#echo $PORT_RANGE2
it returns
10010!10190

is this a "string" value?
