Server Suggestions

We're setting a new lab of approximately 25 clients (50 users or so) up in our new program for the school I work for. Our current options for server software is Novell - what the rest of the school district is on, Windows 2003 or Linux. Listed below are our purposed for the server.

File and print sharing
Web server

Any suggestions what might be best. I have some experience with Mandrake but still need something user friendly to start with.

Thanks

You could probably use Samba for file and print sharing...and Apache for the web server.

If you're going to be running it as a server you can pretty much forget about the GUIs. It's not very hard to configure a server from the command line, so I would suggest getting used to it. What distribution you choose is all about personal preference. I myself would use Slackware, but that's just my opinion. It's not garbled with useless junk, it gives you all the right tools for an administrator; nothing more. It's all on one cd, easy to install, administrator and very stable.
Also what oblivious69 said about samba and apache.

It's sounds like it's not possible to admin from gui??? I've read a little about webmin. Suppose to be good and easy to use. I agree I will need to learn commands. Any other opinions?

Thanks

It's more flexible, secure, stable and less resources the system will use when not using GUIs when running a server.

Like the first reply stated, a server like this sounds very basic and simple. Setup and learn samba for file and print sharing and then use apache for the webserver. Both come with just about every distribution known to mankind.

Could I use a distribution like Suse, Mandrake or and other, or am I better suited to use RH Enterprise, Centos, something more along the server line.

Well your needs are so basic, you could probally use any distro. But I suggest something less-windowy than RH Enterprise. Slackware would be a good choice

Look at http://k12ltsp.org/

It's specifically developed for school servers.

Yea , I've looked at this but the multimedia machines are going to be very high end for video and things of this nature. I think a file server with samba and web server with Apache will do for now. Great solution for school wanting to get the max out of their pcs.

Thanks

hi guys.. i hope you can help me with this...
i am a newbie in using Linux... just got my info through reading some articles...

i am setting up a new server to be our gateway to the internet.
it also houses our web pages...

our old server has something like 20GB disk space, 512MB memory and the new server comes with 80GB, 1GB of memory... i'll transfer the webpages from the old server to this new server, and make the new server as the gateway server...

i am reading the posted article at this website - http://www.linuxdevcenter.com/lpt/a/4379

can i bypass the line
ln -s /dev/ttyS0 /dev/mouse

for the moment, since there is only one modem here at the office and it still connected to our current web server...

i issued the command
wvdial

and got some messages like:
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.54.0
.
.
.
--> Modem not responding

the modem is not yet connected so, i guess this will happen...

also, i have copied the wvdial.conf file from the old web server and put it into the new server under the /etc/wvdial.conf.... this is because it contains the settings to our ISP, so I thought it will be easier for me to do it that way... what problems should I expect?

this will be all for now....
