Serial Port not recognized in Fedora 2

My HP Pavilion a620n will not recognized my serial port when useing Fedora. Hooked up to my serial port is a Zoom external modem. During Installation, the modem seems to be detected, becuase, on the first startup, Kudzu will come up and suggest the modem was removed and if I would like to remove configuration. Hardware detection and internet configuartion wizard fail to recognize the modem. Hardware detection also does not recognize the serial ( or usb for that matter) ports. Thanks in advance for any help. I am a Linux noobie, so please word you ansewers accordingly.
