Serial Port Access

How do I configure the my RH7.1 pc to allow a terminal to be connected to it COM1 port.

When I connect a device to it and execute the following command "echo junktext > /dev/ttyS0" I will get junktest on the screen. The connectivity is there but I can't get a login prompt. I am trying to use mgetty in the /etc/inittab file but that doesn't appear to be working. This is the line I added "1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mgetty ttyS0"
Am I even going in the right direction with this?

The reason for this:

I have a device that lets me communicate with multiple serial devices thru a single modem. This is going to be at a remote sight and I will access to the device in case something happens to the netwrok link.

you might check the kernal configuration, there a alot of serial port options that are not enabled in a "normal" install

This is what I use sometimes on my server, again in /etc/inittab
Code:
s1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 19200 ttyS1 vt100
but I'd advise you to read the man page for your getty. Isn't mgetty a 'minimal' getty that doesn't support serial lines???

HTH

According to the man pages mgetty is the one you use for serial lines. I think you are talking about the minigetty which is used for the virtual terminals, at least that how they are defined in the /etc/inittab file.

I did eventually get it working. It was just defining an mgetty terminal in the /etc/inittab.

Thanks
