(FIXED) sendmail to remote domains

I am trying to use sendmail to send to remote domains (a gmail address, hence not the local system). When I use sendmail it is saying that it cannot send to remote domains. How do I fix this?

EDIT: I was previously using the debian/ubuntu package 'mailutils' for getting sendmail. This was a mistake, becuase it came with way too much stuff that I did not need and was not configured properly for sending email over the internet.

To fix my problem, I just downloaded the package 'sendmail' and used the following method:

echo "This is a Test email from sendmail" | sendmail my_account@gmail.com

Have you allowed an outgoing connection to port 25 in your firewall?

I turned off the firewall and tried this command:

echo "This is another test" | sendmail my_account@gmail.com

But I still get the same error message
