I think all of this is a little too far over my head at the moment. Installing the latest version of SendMail and all.

How can I configure my current install to allow me direct access? Maybe there is an issue in my router somewhere seeing as I cannot make a connection via Telnet either.

telnet is disabled by default and it should probably remain that way, the only thing it should connect to is probably port 25 which is sendmail.

try this

add your ip address of your lan to /etc/mail/access like this

192.168.0 RELAY

then run make inside the folder /etc/mail

then try it

I am using pop-before-smtp

this allows me to forward mail thru the server from the internet from a non-static ip without letting anyone use the mail server for spam.

If you are just using it locally then you can just allow access from your internal ip and all is good.

to accept outside mail from the internet ....

The DæmonPortOptions line signifies the addresses that it will accept mail
from. Try changing the address to 192.168.0.0 (if all of the computers have
addresses that begin with 192.168.0), or change the line in /etc/sendmail.cf
from:

DaemonPortOptions=Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA

to:

DaemonPortOptions=Name=MTA

Which will accept mail from anywhere. I WOULD NOT DO THIS!

SOMEONE WILL FIND IT AND ABUSE IT
