Sending mail through command prompt

I usually send and receive email through evolution. I also have fetchmail to retreive mail through the command line. However, today I sent a few emails through the command line using the "mail" command. It never reached its target. They were sent to external mail addresses (not local). Is there any configuration I need to do to set up for mail to send mail through the CLI? Such as maybe my SMTP server? If so where

BTW, sendmail is up and running fine.

The 'mail' command uses sendmail to... aah... send the mail

You are going to need to configure sendmail to do what you want it to do.

Have a look at what you have in /etc/mail and check out the various configuration files.

There are complete textbooks on how to configure sendmail, but here's a site that has some sample configurations and doc's.
