Send https request to Tomcat listening on http

Hi all,

Something of a strange convoluted question I hope someone can answer.
We have a webapp that runs on Tomcat. In our environment we have two Tomcat servers and the SSL requests are handled by the load balancer.
The way the application is configured we have to use an https request.

Here is the problem. We will take one of the Tomcat servers out of the load balancer to make changes. We then wish to tunnel to that box to verify that it is functional. On our other hosts, this is no problem because we have Apache to take care of the https request. In this case that's not an option.

Via an SSH tunnel, we can send a straight http request to Tomcat and it accepts it. However the application doesn't like it. We try to send an https request to Tomcat via the tunnel and it doesn't know how to read it. Certainly, we would like to enable SSL on Tomcat for this specific reason however the powers that be would like to avoid that.

So to sum up: Is there a way to send an https request to Tomcat via a tunnel if Tomcat is not configured for SSL?

Thanks

Craig

you could use stunnel to make a simple https to http bridge on to tomcat.
