Something like

find /samba/path/ -name 'whatever*' -type f -daystart -ctime +7 -exec rm -f {} \;

work?

Code:
find /samba/path/ -name 'whatever*' -type f -daystart -ctime +7 -exec rm -f {} \;
Human translation:
Find files in your samba path with the name 'whatever' that's a FILE type which the file has a start date of 'your date here', then add +7 days to that date and execute the 'rm' command to delete those files which match that criteria. That's a rough translation.

To use, simply type this in at the command line, substituting something sensible for /samba/path/ to where the files are and a sutiabler filename pattern for whatever*

Edit - ps have a look at man find to see how the find command works

Like this?
this will delete everything that is 7 days older from that date?

Code:
find /home/.recycle/ -name '*' -type f -2/13/2007 -ctime +7 -exec rm -f [] \;
and i need the script to run biweekly?
so i just
add this to my crontab?
Code:
****Sun /home/myscript
pardon me,
the stupid guy.

Something like this might also work (doesn't care about file names, just sees the dates;
Code:
find /samba/path -ctime +7 -depth -mindepth 1 -delete
Here ctime tells to seek files changed more than seven days ago (+7), doing the seek depth-first (i.e. starts from the deepest subdirectory, preventing a situation where parent is deleted first and then errors raised for trying to seek already removed directories), taking care (mindepth) that if the directory /samba/path itself becomes empty it won't be removed, and all files matched get deleted. I haven't tested that myself, but I guess it works.. NOTE: before actually running that, deleting files, do a test and see if it really only gets older than seven days ago changed files (and not newer ones), for example by creating a new file and running the above command with -print instead of -delete, and seeing if you get the newly created file name too. If you do, fix the command; otherwise it ought to be safe. You can add the above command to your crontab for example, to be executed at intervals (like once a day), but in that case remember to execute find with full path (like /usr/bin/find instead of just find) to make sure cron finds the executable if it happens that cron doesn't seek the same $PATH environment variable you do. For information about cron, search LQ for existing posts (to avoid having again doubled information) and Google -- and
Code:
man crontab
It's really easy to use.

EDIT: a quickie for a crontab entry:
Code:
crontab -e
Once in the editor, type this (remember to have spaces between the asterisk marks):
Code:
* * * * 7 /usr/bin/find /samba/path -ctime +7 -depth -mindepth 1 -delete
7 (which is the same as 0) should equal to Sunday, but if it's Monday (I can't remember which it is), check Crontab's man page.

I prefer mtime instead of ctime, so it only grabs files that have been modified in past whatever days instead of just created.

incrementing days doesnt help much and produces no output at all. it's really hard for me to see if it's ready to be implemented or not .

And what do you get from

ls -la /home/public/.recycle ?

Are the files more than a day old?
