screen shrinks when HDMI cable gets plugged in.

Just as the title says. I plug in my HDMI cable and the screen (on my laptop as well as tv) goes to (what I know it as) a full screen ratio (as opposed to widescreen.) I have the option to change the ratio to 16:9 (?) but it gives me some sort of error message and it doesn't fit the screen as best as it could. Any ideas?
I'm using Ubuntu 12.04
