Screen saver locking up computer

I have an 667 MHz Alpha PC running RedHat 7.1. Whenever you start allow the screensaver to start in Gnome, if you let it run for any length of time.. the computer will freeze. No response from keyboard or mouse.. you have to reboot the machine to regain control of the PC. Any idea on how to fix this?

Is the screensaver the only software that is locking up on the system?

You might also look up information on your motherboard and chipset. If the BIOS has some type of power management enabled it could be part of your problem. I've had similar trouble on my dual boot with windows. I haven't seen it happen with Linux yet.

The problem only happens with the screensaver and only in Gnome. When the computer is just at the terminal.. it can sit for days with no problems whatsoever so I don't think it has anything to do with the motherboard or chipset. HELP.

I've had the same problem in FC2/Gnome. On other boards, it was noted that a number of screensavers have this potential, but it only happened with hypercube and hypersphere on mine. I disabled those particular screensavers from my random list. Check which one it's in when it freezes and try disabling it.
