I asked a similar question a while ago, and didn't get much response, but have been googling and battling for a while now still without success, so am trying again.
My problem is with screen resolution in FC1. I can change it up and down through all of the 7 options specified in my xfree86config, but only for my root account. Changes I make from my user account affect both in the lower resolutions, but for some bizarre reason my user account doesn't show the high resolutions even when the root account does.
I can use the cntrl-alt-+ to scroll through the options- I have 7 in root, 3 in user.
I'm very confused- is there a user-specific file somewhere? Is it something to do with the environment variables?
There should be no difference, and I've never heard of
that one before, either. The only thing I can think of is that
the window-manager you're using inflicts some limitations
on the resolutions permitted, it's almost definitely NOT an
xserver issue.
Do you get any messages/errors in /var/log/XFree86.0.log
or ~/.xsession-errors for the user affected?
Thanks for the reply. I hadn't thought of trying another DE.... But had a go with KDE and there's no problem there, so I'd a GNOME thing by the looks of it. I do prefer GNOME, because all my personal settings, menus etc are there- so have you any idea how to fix it?
I checked the log, and there are some errors as follows, but don't know if they mean anything....

i have the same problem. i searched the web for awhile last night and today and could find much info on this, either. have you figured anything else out since your last post?
also, is it normal that when you press ctrl + + (or -) the screen resolution changes but not like it does when you change the resolutions in display settings? by this i mean, after the ctrl + +, i have to move the mouse to the bottom (or right) of the screen to scroll over to the areas that are outside of my monitor, whereas, if i change the resolution in display settings, i can see the whole desktop on my monitor.
No, I haven't found the solution, and it was still there when I upgraded to FC2. But I've actually decided I prefer KDE, much more intuitive to use, so I'm going to stick with it. But if you do come across the solution I'd love to hear!
