Screen Jumps Around at Boot and Shutdown

I was really happy with my new installation of Fedora Core 6, I have not had too many problems to deal with.

Now, whenever the computer starts up or shuts down, the screen jumps around.
It seems to have started after I used pup to download updates.

Another thing, sometimes the computer gets up to ~100% use, and it has even tripped my overheat alarm twice(never happened with windows).

Can anybody help?
Thanks.

Hello,

I had a similar problem a while ago after I bought a new TFT monitor, after dropping back into console mode from X and during boot/shutdown, the screen would go berserk trying to auto-adjust the screen settings. Anyway had a brainwave that it might be because of the low resolution (my particular monitor didnt like anything below 1024x768).
So I suggest increasing the resolution for the console. To do this I appended the "vga=yyyy" option to the kernel line in grub's menu.lst.

From mine:

Code:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-2-k7 root=/dev/hdc2 ro vga=0x318
There is a nice table somewhere that gives you all the vga= options but I can't find it at the moment. Sorry bout that.

Well there must be something using it up, running "top" gives you a list of what is currently running and what resources each process is using. If its not a regular thing then I guess you'll have to wait until your overheat alarm starts and then run "top".

Later.

That worked perfectly, thank you.

I'll try using top next time I start having problems.

Thank you again for the help, now I need to go and find out why BSD won't work right...
