Screen brightness issue on laptops booting linux
 

Hi

Just a week back I bought a bran new laptop
Sony Vaio VPCEH26EN with the following config

i3 processor
4gb RAM
500gb HDD
512mb NVIDIA® GeForce® 410M GPU
15.5 inch screen and Windows 7 basic

I was searching a possible way to backup the factory config and then start partitioning. In this search I ran into clonezilla.
I prepared a pen drive and booted into my new laptop with this pen drive.
I was disappointed as the screen brightness was at its fulllest 100% on boot and further with no way to decrease it.

Questions
1. Do all laptops face this screen brightness problems with linux. On googling I have found various solutions for various distros making me think that this is a common problem. I wanted to make sure or have i bought a laptop that will run linux at 100% screen brightness blinding me.

2. Any specific solutions to resolve this problem

Nvidia provides a proprietary driver for the system. Live distors would not have it installed, since there are many drivers for Nvidia, and ATI GPU's.

There are lots of posts about these drivers, since not all users are familiar with how to get, or install the drivers. This also varies from distro to distro. SOme provide a driver in a package, some do not, and leave it up to the user to download the driver from the manufacturers web site, install and configure it.

I use Nvidia drivers on SLackware. It takes about 5 minutes to install, once downloaded. Works for me on my system. I do have some what older hardware, since my system is now about two years old.

See if your hardware is supported before you install. i would be very surprised if it were not supported. then look into what ever distro you plan on using, and find out if they supply Nvidia packages, or if you get them directly from Nvidia for installation.
