Saving Googlemail emails

What is the best way to save emails to disk directly from Googlemail? Thunderbird saves them as .eml files but Googlemail doesn't appear to have this facility.

I don't think you can save emails directly to your desktop from the webmail. You'd have to go through an email client such as thunderbird, kmail or evolution, configure an offline IMAP account (or a normal POP3 account) and then backup the program's storage directory.

Here is a tutorial on using thunderbird: ehow.com

This blog entry has a tutorial on using getmail, which seems to be the more linux-friendly way to do it.

Google has a group called the Data Liberation Front that has some details on getting your data out of GMail and other google apps.

Good luck
