Samsung LCD tv and linux?

hello all :)

i just bought a new samsung lcd tv, which is also pc compatible. i am running winxp now and it's all working fine. i can actually use my pc and watch cable/satellite tv at the same tv. it's just great! :)

however, i read and then comfirmed from a samsumg customer service representative that their samsungs tvs are not linux compatible. i was wondering why? i really want to install linux on my comp and use my new 26" lcd tv. is any1 experiencing the same "problem"? any solutions? they were unable to explain me why and said there'r no solutions. cmon!:D

thanks for your time,
filippo

Hmm.. had not heard that. Cannot think of a reason why Samsung would do that since they are linux friendly with many of their printers, etc.

Some times products ARE linux compatible but they mean that they do not provide linux related CUSTOMER SERVICE for their products?

hope it works our for you.

We have a 15" Samsung 510mp, which is used primarily as a TV.

It also works fine as monitor. In fact, if a person wants a 15" monitor, this is a good one. (As a TV driven by standard cable, it is nothing special.)

However... Kanotix happens to boot up to the native resolution of the Samsung. If it booted up to a lower resolution, it would look poor. The resolution would need to be adjusted.

Speculating... In this case, since this is a TV, Samsung just might not want to deal with being prepared to tell Linux-newbies how to adjust the resolution.

I wonder if the huge variety and number of options in Linux might be a factor. Of course, we don't know, and we wouldn't really know no matter what Samsung's PR staff tells us... just like we don't know if a Samsung TV is Linux compatible.

Anyway, the Samsung 510mp works fine with Kanotix running on an Asus/Via-based PC with a Geforce FX5200 video card.

tx u both for ur responses :D

what if i run a linux live cd, suse for example? if it does work fine does it mean it's compatible? or this test really doesn't prove it since i must install the os completely on my hd. any ideas?

tx again :D

You might want to try your TV/monitor with SUSE live and if it works, ask your question in the SUSE/Novell forum.

I don't use SUSE. I have found that hardware compatibility with one Linux flavor does not mean compatibility with all. So, I can't answer your question with absolute confidence.

Good Luck

good idea bandersnatchy :D

i'll try the live cd and then if it works i'll go ahead and post a message on a suse forum.

thanks
