samba user can't login

hi, i made some samba shares on my RH 9 box, modified samba.conf to have [homes], [public],[myshare] as shares, when i tried to connect to each of them from windows, it prompts me for user name and password, but i can;t seet to get any username valid.
what could be the problem? the samba log says:
passdb/pdb_smbpasswd.c:db_getsampwnam
unable to open passdb database

Just a silly question, have you added users into samba?
#smbpasswd -a username

That question is FAR FROM silly! That is most likely the OP's problem.

do i have to add users to be samba users? I remember I didn't have to do so before, system accounds would have access. i think the users on this box don't have samba service rights but i dont know where should i start
