Running of root-insistenet programs


Hi guys

I want to install some programs on my pc.I have only the user password.no root permissions..

Can I do that??Is there a general way of doing this?

Yes, its possible, but you have to install it in your home dir (or in other catalog you can write to). Best make directory for all programs, for example home/_USER_/programs. Then :
If you are installing from source, you will have to configure with option :
$ ./configure --prefix=/home/_USER_/programs
$ make
$ make install
If you are installing from rpm write :
rpm -i --prefix=/home/_USER_/programs --file program-0.0.0.rpm

i am presently compiling that way..........hopefully it should work.....

and is there any way I can install the whole of linux kernel in my user account.............

I mean something like ...........I want to install the whole of LFS system in my user account.....so that I can meddle and fiddle with the kernel(then my own).

I think you can put kernel and whole "/boot" dir where do you want. I don't know how, but sure it is possible. But, to use this kernel you must boot it :-). And this is hard. You (as normal user) can't modify LILO's or GRUB's config file...
You could use other boot loader, for example on CD/pendrive/floppy, but you have to change BIOS settings.................BIOS probably is not available without password...

And i think root would not like this....
