runlevel
Hi guys,
I got some problem with my vector linux-5.1 installation. Yesterday I just re-installed my vector linux. I have Pentium Celeromn 266MHz, 64MB SDRAM and 15GB Hdd. I assumed my installation is ok. But problem arrived when I reboot my system. It won't load the kernel. Loading process stop at
INIT:version 2.84 booting
Enter runlevel:
It asked me to enter the runlevel. I did enter the runlevel. I tried with 1-5. But my pc just hanged. Anybody knows what happened to me?
Can you boot off of a rescue disk and see if you have an /etc/inittab file on your root partition? The /etc/inittab file tells init what to do for each runlevel, so if this file is missing or corrupt, you're going to experience a problem similar to what you have described.
anyone know how to change runlevel without logging in?
runlevel has no meaning if you are not logged in to the system---how would you ever KNOW what the runlevel was....
You can use a passed parameter in the grub.conf file to get into single-user mode, but I'm not sure what other options are possible that way.
The standard method would be to setup /etc/inittab to control the run-level on next startup.
I havent been on LQ in a long time. Heh. Im having the same issues with zenwalk 4.
contrary to what the others have said, initab is where gettys are spawned and it executes prior to login. in fact, if you forget your root password, and the feature of which i speak is not disabled in the kernel compilation, you can enter runlevel 1 (via kernel params at grub or lilo)which is single user mode, you can change your root password from here.
check the messages prior to it asking you for runlevel, if its too fast, you might have to randomly printscrn button push in order to see whats going on. on mine its right there, clear as day, no inittab found .. maybe fstab isnt mounting my etc directory, im not sure yet, but ill get back to you guys on this .. when was this thread started anyway heh.
