I was wondering if there was any way to run X applications through a ssh session. I connect to my Ubuntu machine through Putty on a XP machine.

Yes. To use it through ssh, you need to have an X environment installed on windows. I believe there are a couple of commercial x servers for windows (Xwin32 is the one that comes to mind). I think you can also use Cygwin on windows.

Personally, I use VNC. But I'm not sure how secure it is since it's just on my local home net and I'm not too concerned about the security.

I followed a tutorial how to set up Cygwin to run with Putty here.

Now when I try to open an application I get the error

Code:
Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

I figured out what the problem was. I never restarted sshd after enabling X11Forwarding.
