run e2fsck when system is running?

Is it possible to run e2fsck without rebooting the system? Can I run e2fsck when system is running?

You can't run e2fsck on a mounted file system without risking causing more problems so you would need to umount the file system then check it. Clearly this isn't much use if its the root file system!

I would have thought that you would be running EXT3 or ReiserFS on RH9 so how come you need to fsck anyway?

cheers
