rsync skips directory when trying to restore

I periodically backup to a second internal hardrive. Typically I keep the backup drive unmounted, mounting only when I what to backup. After I mount the drive, I backup by:

rsync -az /daytodaydrive /backupdrive --progress

It goes through and does its business, every now and then there's an error I have to deal with.

I've never actually had to restore anything from my backup drive, but yesterday I tried. I used the following:

rsync /backupdrive /daytodaydrive --progress

This gives the message that rsync is skipping the directory and nothing is updated. I know things had changed on my /daytodaydrive.

Since -az archives and compresses the data, I thought I'd look in the man pages to see what the switches were to reverse the process. I didn't see anything.

Is the fact that I'm compressing and archiving preventing me from restoring or is something else wrong?

Thanks...

Duh...never mind I figured it out. Use -az going both ways.
