RPM Question

Now that I've got Linux running on my fast computer I'm trying to install bigger programs and do more with the operating system. When I try to install a rpm file it always says I need to be root. Is there a way I can install it from the command line so I can just 'su' into root? Also, when I do logout and log back in as root it always gives an error box with the name of the program. Any ideas?

Yes of course you'll need to be root to install rpms
and you can do it with su in XTerm
just type
/bin/su
enter password and install rpm's

Re: RPM Question

I guess you can set /usr/bin/rpm or wherever ur file is to suid so that normal users can install rpm's

#cd /usr/bin
#chmod 6755 rpm

well they get installed to whereever they are set to... it's not important really where they go... if you want to find out where they are then...

rpm -ql package-name

which will list all the files in trhe given installed rpm.

setting suid when you don't need to is never a good idea.
