RPM or source
Hi,
I am new on this forum but I have been using Linux for awhile.
I have an issue I am thinking about for few weeks and I couldn't find the best solution on it.
The issue is about maintain a Linux system. In my setup you want to use Linux for a specific problem, like doing some programming or something very particular and having a quite reasonable UI where you can browse the web, listen to music and read your email.
I am doing this for a while, I mean I installed my current Linux 4 years ago. During this time there are periods where I used it very often and very long periods when I did not use it. While using it I tried to bring it as up to date as possible.
Here comes my problem. I installed the system form distribution and I try to stick to the RPM dependencies. For different specific problems I install different application form source (i.e. Python). Now, if I also install another package who needs the application I already installed form source, it will be a problem!
With other common applications (i.e. Gnome) if I want the brand new version I will have the take it by myself. The latest version won't be available with the distribution packages. OK, maybe I can manage to compile it by myself, I have a very bad feeling that I will gonna have big problems with some shared libraries of which older RPM packages need an old version than my new compiled application needs.
I thinking what should I do? Should I stay on the RPM track and have older version all the time. Or should I take the way of source code and compile everything by my self.
Neither of those solutions is good! I am struggling to find some middle ground which is very consistent and reliable.
