RPM, installed but uninstalled???

im trying to uninstall an rpm, well call it old.rpm, i know i installed it, because without it i wouldnt be able to install xine

so i:
# rpm -ev old.rpm
error: package old.rpm is not installed

so i decided to install it so i could uninstall it (it wont let me install my new package until the old is uninstalled)

#rpm -ivh old.rpm
package old.rpm is already installed

so now im thinking wtf, its installed but its uninstalled, it works but i cant update it because its installed and needs to be uninstalled but its uninstalled and yet its still installed :S

can someone help me please, this is getting annoying

before i leave id jsut like to say, if rehat EVER wants to rival microsoft, they really have to get their rpm system working properly

I guess you typed the wrong filename. For example not rpm -e xine but rpm -e xine-0.9.21-fr1.
Do a rpm -qa | grep nameOfProgramm to get the prober name.

rpm -e nameOfProgram
without .arch.rpm
It might be easier for you to use the gui for that things.

This might help you:
http://apt-rpm.tuxfamily.org/

Download the prober rpm. Install it
Then open a terminal and type
apt-get update && apt-get install synaptic

Then just launch synaptic. It's very easy tu use.

Hi Bill,

Just accessed the URL that you suggested and tried to download binaries for RH9 but it says 'This document contains no data"

Where can I find the 'prober'?

Tom

ftp://apt-rpm.tuxfamily.org/apt/redh...5-fr2.i386.rpm

This is the direct link. Maybe you have to right click and do a "save link location to" or however it is called.

Btw, whats wrong with 'prober' ? Wrong word? I am not a native english speaker.
