Most likely it's the case of the package name. Are you sure MySQL is capitalized the way you're typing it? Try using all lower case.

What was the name of the mysql RPM file that you installed? use the name of the file, minus ".rpm" as the package name.

When you want to remove an rpm package, run the command rpm -qa | less and find the name of the package you want to remove. That's the name the rpm data base knows the package as. Then use that name in the
rpm -e <package_name> to remove it.

Yes. I just started using rpm. Had been compiling my own but that gets to be a pain in the ar$e removing ang updating...Learned rpm from conversations about pkg_ commands in *BSD

as fr as rpms go I found .rpm -qa |sort -i | more (or less) very easy to find my packages than the unsorted jumle you normally get.

Furthermore I found the debug mode excellent when I needed more info on why they were failing. for example rpm -evv name_of_package or rpm -ivvh name_of.rpm
