Hi,
I coudnt login as root in my linux 7.3 system. .
Am able to su from other users but with root login I get 'Login incorrect'.
I tried with passwd -d root. But still the same.

Are you logging in from a console or from a telnet connection? for added security logging in as root from a telent connection is disabled by default.

Ah - you mean that your root account password is lost. Reboot and append " 1" to your kernel arguments at boot then when you boot you will be in single user mode. Just type:
passwd root

then enter the password you want for the root user. You can restart the machine again b running:
shutdown -r now
