Root Drive Nuked - Please Help

While automatically updating my Dapper distro, my root drive got messed up somehow. Using a live CD, I've tried some of the easy stuff, like fsck-ing and so forth. But so far I cannot mount the drive. It is physically fine, but apparently has a bad superblock. There is some crucial data that I would very much like to rescue off of it, if it is at all possible.

I'm fairly good with a terminal, but nothing close to a Linux whiz. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Have a look at tune2fs, dumpe2fs, e2fsck, and debugfs. One of those may be able to get more information in re the problem, or perhaps even fix it.

You didn't mention what filesystem type it is. If it's ext2 or ext3, you can try an alternate superblock with the -b option for e2fsck.

Thanks. I've tried that already, with several different superblock numbers. No go.
