Root's protection works across computers?

If I protect a file with root permissions and then give the hard drive with the file to someone else, would they need to know my root password to access the file, or would their local root allow access?

I would suspect they could open it with their root account, but I'm not positive of that.

You could always zip it up and apply a password to the file. Then only people with the password could unzip it...

You would have zero protection what-so-ever, in your proposed scenerio.

If you want to protect your files, you must encrypt them.

Any suggestions for an encryption method? I didn't think gzip had one.

Do you have gpg installed (there is a package for it with Slackware)? If so have a look at http://www.gnupg.org/
