Im trying to escape from M$. I can't get Xwindows to work. I have Red Hat 7.2, dual MP2000+, 2 gigs of ram, and an nVidia Geforce 4 ti 4600 vid card. I have a viewsonic P225f monitor.
I have a cable modem and was able to ftp to nvidia's download. I read the instructions and d/l NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-2960.i386.rpm and NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-2960.rh72smp.athlon.rpm. I installed them as per instruction and got no errors.
When I run startx I get:
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processeed) with 0 events remaining.
I read more and went to vi my Xwindows config files and still haven't got anywhere.
I can run Windowez 2k Pro & XPee Pro w/o any probs so I doubt its hardware.
i donīt know much about rh but there are several config files. the one u have to edit should be sth like /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 or similar. so maybe u configured the wrong file? are there some more error messages when starting x? module not found or unknown driver or sth like that?
is it possible u have old nvidia rpms installed on ur box?
ask rpm -q 'NVIDIA_GLX'
if so u should update them
rpm -U --replacepkgs /ur/NVIDIA_GLX
but all in all - ?? - maybe someoneelse knows better
good luck,
jens
Hey J-Ray, thanks for responding. I did look at the X86Config-4 file. It looks like I have the Geforce 3 drivers installed. Im loggeed in as root.
I did the rpm -q NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-2960.i386.rpm and it said not installed.
Then I did the rpm -U --replacepkgs... and it looked like something was happening for a few seconds, then when I did the rpm -q ... command again it still said not installed.
I tried Xconfigurator and my vid card & monitor doesn't show up. I tired generic vga and a similar monitor (viewsonic 810) and it said there was a problem and I should go back and fix it.

Also use lsmod to check that your nvidia kernel module has loaded correctly.
Those are just general suggestions - I don't have th expertise to interpret that particular error message.
k i figured it out, I had overlooked the instruction -
