What sound card do you have and do you use the ALSA or OSS drivers?

Let me guess, the sometimes when it does work is when you log in as root, and the sometimes it doesn't work is when you login as a standard user?

Do you want help or not? I'm asking if it works when you startx as root, and doesn't when you startx as a standard user.
I also need to know if your using ALSA or OSS drivers.
And it wouldn't hurt to know what sound card you are using.

If it works as root, but doesn't as a standard user, then you just need to be added to the "audio" or "sound" group in your groups.

# vi /etc/group

scroll down to the line for "audio" or "sound" and add your standard user name to the end of that line after the : That should fix the problem, IF this is your problem, but being as I was guessing, and your reply didn't give me any information I asked for, it makes it a little hard for me to help you out.

Please don't forget to reply to this post and let us know if your problem is fixed.

Linuxlah, do you have an "audio" or "sound" line in your /etc/group file?

balaji2001com - I need to know what sound card you are using as well. And what distro too.

I don't have any "audio" or "sound" group in etc /grop ... so what else I have to do after I add the audio group and put my user in that group?...
do I have to change the /dev/dsp own by this group? ....

That should work fine, the any user you add to that group will be able to access /dev/dsp. ALSA and OSS automatcally create a group of this sort, which you have to add the users to manually.

If you use kde, you can use the "kuser" program located in the system section of your kmenu to edit users and groups, then chown group /dev/dsp, and you should be set.

Just to confirm... are you saying that I only need to add "sound" or "audio" group and append selected users to it? So I don't need to chmod the /dev/dsp...?

I'll try it ... now

This is what I did..

I add a new group called audio and put couple of users to it...... sad to say it dosen't work...

p/s: I did not change my /dev/dsp permission . unfortunately I can't stay back to try on "sound" group.... . May be I'll continue tomorrow. Looking forward to solve this.

No, if you go with the sound or audio group option, you have to change ownership of /dev/dsp to that particular group. If it is still owned by x user and y user/group tries to access it, and they don't have the permission, they will be rejected. Therefore, you add the users to the group, and change ownership of /dev/dsp to "audio" or whatever your sound group is you created.

It seems like we solve the problem. I've test with couple of users and it work. The funny thing is, when I log in using a uset that is not in the audio group I can't get any audio when I'm using KDE but I can get it using GNOME. Peace
